PAYOLA?

Reuters reports today that three broadcast groups in New York state have received subpoenas in connection with NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's ongoing probe of the link between independent promoters and radio stations.
Reuters says Clear Channel and Entercom have confirmed receiving subpoenas, while officials at Viacom's Infinity Broadcasting have declined comment on reports Infinity was also served papers. It has been reported previously that an Infinity Operations Director in Rochester and an Entercom PD in Buffalo have been terminated since the Spitzer probe began last year.
In a statement, Clear Channel said, "Clear Channel has received a subpoena from the New York Attorney General's office and is cooperating fully with the investigation into the industry's use of independent promoters and associated allegations of 'pay for play'. In April 2003, Clear Channel voluntarily severed all ties with independent promoters to avoid even the appearance of impropriety, and we are confident the investigation will show the company is in full compliance with the law.

Essence "Take Back the Music"

ESSENCE MAGAZINE announces
Take Back the Music Week: February 21st-25th
ESSENCE and Spelman College
Cohost a Town Hall Meeting
for Week’s Finale
New York (February 15, 2005)—ESSENCE announces Take Back the Music Week, February 21st through February 25th. The weeklong initiative is a call to action for individuals to express their concerns, likes and dislikes about popular music. ESSENCE is encouraging the public to effect change by calling, writing letters and sending E-mails with their thoughts about how Black women are portrayed in music and videos directly to the people who can make a change—programming executives at cable networks, radio stations and record companies.
The finale of the Take Back the Music Week will be a Town Hall Meeting cohosted by ESSENCE and Spelman College. The Town Hall Meeting will be held, Friday, February 25, 7–9 p.m., at the Cosby Auditorium on Spelman’s campus in Atlanta, Georgia. The topic will be “Where Are We Now? How Did We Get Here? Where Are We Going?” The panel discussion will feature Michael Lewellen, vice-president of corporate communications at BET; Bryan Leach, vice-president Urban A&R at TVT Records; Kevin Powell, author and activist; MC Lyte, female hip-hop artist/actress; Tarshia Stanley, Spelman professor of English; and Moya Bailey, Spelman student. The panel will be moderated by Michaela angela Davis, ESSENCE executive fashion and beauty editor.
Take Back the Music Week is a part of ESSENCE magazine’s Take Back the Music campaign, which is a yearlong in-depth examination of the ways in which Black women are depicted in popular music and videos. Throughout the year, ESSENCE will survey the landscape to present a broader scope and understanding of this provocative issue, and provide a platform for discussion. The campaign will incorporate observations from entertainment insiders, industry leaders, consumers, journalists and activists. ESSENCE will publish the diverse viewpoints with topics such as “Dirty Dancing,” “Dollars and $ense of Hip-Hop” and “How To Talk to Your Kids.” The wide-ranging opinions will offer a historical perspective, a current analysis and a glimpse into the future. The campaign will also illustrate the great degree to which Black people feel conflicted over this important issue.
For more information on the Take Back the Music campaign, please see the March 2005 issue of ESSENCE or visit essence.com/takebackthemusic.

The next album will be about the same, except that the record company will insist they spend more time and money on it. Since the previous one never "recouped," the band will have no leverage, and will oblige. The next tour will be about the same, except the merchandising advance will have already been paid, and the band, strangely enough, won't have earned any royalties from their T-shirts yet. Maybe the T-shirt guys have figured out how to count money like record company guys. Some of your friends are probably already this fucked.

The lyrically challenged 2004 what lyrics are you hearing in 2005

LYRICALLY CHALLENGED:

What is “Lyrically Challenged?”

Lyrically challenged refers to songs that have infectious hooks (repeating verse), tight beats or phat samples and are usually supported with big budget record company marketing dollars, and “heavy” radio airplay across the country.

Lyrically Challenged songs make your head bob, your fingers snap, and you may sing along without even knowing it.

Lyrically Challenged songs explore sex, violence and drug scenarios, but target mostly young audiences.

What are these lyrics really saying?
Who is listening and watching?
How are these lyrics affecting behavior?
Whom do we hold accountable?
What are WE going to do about it? {link to TAKE ACTION page}

*Note – IE ‘s objective is to reveal truth and promote justice. The accountability and onus of airing and promoting Lyrically Challenged content is that of the BROADCASTER and/or MEDIA OUTLET. Public Airwaves should serve the “public” and not the Top 10 media companies in the world.

Lyrically Challenged Spotlight

Song Title: Get Low
Record Company: TVT Records

On the heels of the racist episode that played out on New York's Hot 97, there are a growing number of people in the nation's capitol Washington DC who are getting unearthed about a new song that is proudly being played on the number one station in the market WPGC 95.5 which is home to the legendary Donnie Simpson.

The song is called 'Wait' by the Ying Yang Twins and its about as explicit and pornographic as you can get, leaving very little to the imagination.
At a time when there has been nationwide coverage about the campaign launched by Essence Magazine to 'Take Back the Music' where a whooping 72% of their readership demanded that corporate broadcasters be more responsible, it appears that WPGC may have gotten a different message.

The question being asked is 'Who is responsible for playing this song? Why are they presenting this type of pornographic material? Where do they draw the line? Are there other stations in the DC area airing the same song? These are the hard investigative questions ardent rap critics like Stanley Crouch, Clarence Paige and Bill O'Reilly to name a few need to be asking. They should use their airtime to bring this issue to light unless they are following the example of fellow rap critic Armstrong Williams and getting economic perks to remain silent and look away.

These questions need not be asked to the Ying Yang Twins. It's obvious that the music they made is for an adult audience that can responsibly handle x rated material. The group has a right to make whatever song they feel works for their audience. More importantly this Atlanta based group did not walk into WPGC radio station, put a gun to the heads of the executives at Infinity and demand that they play the song.
It is obvious that there were a group of 'responsible' broadcast executives that made a calculated decision to present this to the masses and left very few channels open to debate or discuss the concerns of the community. It is obvious that a decisoion was made to play this song at a time when a lot of young people would be listening.
Sadly they appear to following the trend of many corporate broadcast mediums and are not listing the names of the program and music directors for the public to see, nor are they publishing a playlist that reflects the actual songs that are being played on the air. Is it enough to say that wroking parents need to somehow find a way to keep their kids from watching or listening to something explicit when it's being made so accesible?
Here are some numbers for people to use 301-918-0955 is for WPGC and their headquarters in New York is 212-846-3939
Here's the email that is circulating around DC

Hey guys,
Have you heard the new Ying Yang song called, "Wait" or the real title... "Wait till you see my dick" song? Well it's been #3 on the WPGC (Wash. DC) countdown for at least the last couple days... THE BEAT is tight, but I couldn't understand the lyrics entirely, but knew when I heard the moaning and groaning there was more to the song, so I ask you ... Does a song still have the same meaning when you hear the edited version on the radio? We all know some words aren't even really edited... what's the difference between BIA - TCH and Bitch? Or B?
check out the lyrics to WAIT... this is what programmers/broadcasters think of our community...its ok to promote this to OUR 12 +

The Emmis Communications owned-HOT 97 WQHT FM Radio Station "SmackFest2005" promotion was briefly discussed on the Atlanta, Georgia-based WAOK1380 AM "CrossTalk" Morning Show on January 27, 2005. It was not untilI visited the Hot97.com website that a broader perspective of the eventwas realized. Ironically, the homepage opens with a lengthyexplanation/apology for a recent tasteless spoof song about theSoutheast Asia Tsunami victims and cites moral and social responsibilityas the rationale. However, on the same page is an advertisement for the"SmackFest 2005". I do not have the vernacular to explain my thoughtsafter selecting that option. All it takes for any self-respecting humanbeing is to click onto one video clip to realize the hypocriticallyinsane inhumanity. "SmackFest 2005" is as barbaric, graceless, inhuman, lowbrow, primitive, tasteless, uncivilized, uncouth, and vulgar of astation-promoted event perceivable. In the one video clip that Iviewed, there were two young black women slapping each other in the face- for $500. The music, "Ante Up" by the group "M.O.P." - glorifyingstreet robbery, is dominating the aura as there are 3 rounds of eachwoman slapping the other. The slapping is judged and a "winner" isselected. In the end of the aforementioned video clip, the "winner"proudly boasts (with a swollen face and still-bleeding lower lip) thatshe "...slapped "this chick", and still won the $500". First, what is the desired end/message? Second, according to the EmmisCommunications Corporate Portfolio description of HOT97 WQHT(http://www.emmis.com/portfolio/wqht.aspx)"... HOT 97 is targeted to the12-34 year old and is committed to contributing to the youth of thecommunity through their Hip Hop Has Heart Foundation and its Hip HopSymphony program, providing instruments to under-funded music programsin New York City's public school system." Yet, this event is shamelesslypromoted to the very age demographic that statistically perpetuates thegreatest percentage of violence. Last, on the homepage and in referenceto the Tsunami-song incident, Emmis Radio President, Mr. Rick Cummingsis quoted as stating that "What happened is morally and sociallyindefensible". I am interested in obtaining the "moral and socialdefense" for "SmackFest" promotion. Assist me in making a reasonableconnection. This is not entertainment. This is the glorification of senselessviolence for very little money, thereby subliminally insinuatingdesperation, and reinforcing universally accepted stereotypes in thisgenre and its supporters/participants. I personally and whole-heartedly request this madness to be discontinuedimmediately.

Emmis fires two and donates a Million...

WQHT/Hot 97 and Emmis Communications Terminate Two Members of Morning Show Crew for Displaying Gross Insensitivity and Making Offensive RemarksEmmis Donates $1 Million to Charities to Aid in Tsunami Relief & Recovery
New York – February 1, 2005: WQHT/Hot 97-FM and Emmis Communications announced today that they have terminated the employment of morning show producer Rick Del Gado for his role in writing, producing and airing “The Tsunami Song,” a highly insensitive parody of the 1985 single “We Are the World.” Hot 97 and Emmis also terminated morning show personality Todd Lynn for making offensive, racially insensitive comments while on the air. Both terminations are effective immediately.Simultaneously, Emmis announced that it will make a lump-sum donation of $1 million to Give2Asia to aid the organization in its Tsunami relief and recovery effort. An internal investigation by Hot 97 and Emmis determined that the singularly egregious actions of Lynn and Delgado warranted termination from their employment at the station. Other members of the morning show crew: Miss Jones, DJ Envy and Tasha Hightower have each been given two-week suspensions. The salaries of these individuals will be redirected to Give2Asia for the duration of their suspensions, which will end on Wednesday, February 9. Another member of the morning show crew, Miss Info, has not been suspended.“The actions of the morning show crew were socially and morally indefensible and the entire Emmis family is ashamed by this,” said Rick Cummings, President of Emmis Radio “Emmis and Hot 97 have investigated this matter thoroughly over the course of the last week. Our decision to terminate Mr. Del Gado and Mr. Lynn while suspending the other members of the morning crew sends a message that this type of insensitivity is utterly unacceptable.”
